We live in turbulent times. Convulsus comes from Latin and means «agitated»; «disturbed». We are faced with a repetition of that rebellion of the masses diagnosed by Ortega in 1930. Society only exists when the majority of the collective is made up of individuals with a certain degree of enlightenment and independent judgement. If this trait disappears, society becomes a mass, and for the mass «to be different is indecent. The mass overwhelms the egregious, the individual and the select».
We live in an unsettling time where people are unashamedly accepting post-truth narratives of fact which, according to the RAE, is the deliberate distortion of reality that manipulates beliefs and emotions in order to influence public opinion and social attitudes. These are times of «magical realism» when it comes to informing ourselves, where the unreal and the strange are presented as something everyday and commonplace. False narratives that numb consciences and discernment have taken hold.
