The Institute of Graduate Studies in Business (IESE)\nrecently presented a report on the expectations regarding the youth employability, based on a survey of 53 large companies operating in Spain.\nemployability, based on a survey of 53 large companies operating in Spain. The\nstudy compiled employers' opinions on whether the current educational system\neffectively prepares future workers to build a professional profile that meets\nthe demands driven by technological advances and new working methodologies in\nthe workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employees of the future must be proficient in fields such as\nbig data<\/strong> analysis, the internet of things<\/strong>, blockchain<\/strong>, digital marketing<\/strong> and e-commerce<\/strong>,\namong others. Moreover, they will have to move in cross-sectional, automated,\nand international environments, in which AGILE methodologies will be applied\nand so will design thinking and gig economy concepts (project based work). In\nthe future there will be more self-employed workers, and many activities that\ncompanies currently carry out internally will be outsourced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of this will be a challenge for the development of new\nskills among those hired in the future and for maintaining long-term\nemployability in the corporate realm. Firms do not see enough collaboration\nfrom the education sector or the government in ensuring that young people who\nare preparing themselves for the workplace acquire the necessary competencies\ndemanded of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Gap in Competencies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data reflects the difficult situation of youth employment in\nThe unemployment rate among young people surpasses 33%, compared to 14% in the rest of the EU.\nin the rest of the EU. Moreover, the OECD believes that technological changes\nwill make 50% of current jobs disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Spain, 35% of young people have some level of compulsory\neducation, 24% having graduated middle or high school while 28% hold university\ndegrees. However, companies hire 67% of their employees among university\ngraduates. Therefore, in Europe 51% of those hired have professional training,\na percentage that in Spain falls to 24%. And in our country, 31% of employees\nperform functions that do not align with their level of education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given that the changes at the workplace will become more consolidated\nin five years' time, companies will need candidates that demonstrate with ease\nample knowledge in finance, big data, digital marketing, foreign languages\nand blockchain; skills such as teamwork, customer orientation, communication,\nwork ethic and negotiation; and attitudes such as adaptability and resilience,\nethical values, entrepreneuriship, respect, initiative, creative thinking and multicultural dexterity.\nmulticultural dexterity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, the competency gap will widen, according to the\nIESE report. In fact, 73% of the companies surveyed believe that this gap has\ngrown, while 72% experience great difficulties in hiring young people today,\ngiven their poor preparation in the core competencies that will be required in\nthe future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Solution: Closer collaboration<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another conclusion of the IESE report is that the education\nsystem should teach more skills and proper attitudes, which help students cope and\nadapt to different working environments. Specifically, the companies in the\nstudy bring forth the following proposals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
