The Alicia Koplowitz Foundation awards five short research stay grants

The Alicia Koplowitz Foundation has awarded five grants for short stays for specialisation and research in Psychiatry, Psychology or Child and Adolescent Neurosciences and Neuropaediatrics in its 2018 call for applications. The scholarship holders will spend between six and twelve months specialising in universities and hospitals in the United States, the United Kingdom and Argentina.

The five selected by the Foundation's evaluation committee are:

  • Laura Carballeira Carrera, who has completed the PIR at the Hospital Universitario HM Puerta del Sur, in Móstoles (Madrid), and has applied for a six-month stay at the Université Paris Descartes, Hôpital Cochin, in Paris (France).

  • Antonio Rodríguez Morenoa neuroscientist at the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville, who has applied for a 12-month stay at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge (UK).

The Alicia Koplowitz Foundation Short Stays Grants have been awarded annually since 2007 and are aimed at psychiatrists and clinical psychologists with training in the area of childhood or adolescence, neuropaediatricians and post-doctoral researchers in the neurosciences, with degrees in Medicine, Biology or Pharmacy. They consist, fundamentally, of financial support for the grantee, as the centres where the research programmes are carried out are free to choose. The aim is to support research in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry and to extend research support projects in the field of neurosciences and neuropaediatrics, focusing above all on early neurodegenerative diseases. The financial endowment is 3,000-4,000 euros per month for stays in foreign hospitals, universities and research institutes that have programmes appropriate to the Foundation's project.

The Evaluation Committee that selected the winning projects was made up of Dr. Lola Picouto, child psychiatrist and former grantee of the Alicia Koplowitz Foundation; Dr. Laia Villalta, child and adolescent psychiatrist at the 0 to 5 years old Unit and Functional Unit for the Care of Sexual Abuse of Minors (UFAM), at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona, and former grantee of the Alicia Koplowitz Foundation; Dr. Juanjo Carballo, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid and former grantee of the Alicia Koplowitz Foundation; and Dr. Pedro Castro, Neuropaediatrician at the Paediatric Department of the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid.
