The Mediterranean diet and physical exercise: scientific basis

Dr. José Antonio Rodríguez Piedrabuena, a specialist in psychiatry and psychoanalysis, analyses in depth the scientific foundations of the Mediterranean diet and physical exercise.

"We are inundated with headlines about health and especially about what we should eat. An infinite variety of diets appear in book form and in headlines. In this book you will not find recipes. It is about bringing the reader up to date on the scientific basis of what we should eat, and for this it is necessary to consider the body, the human being as a unit. This is why I include a description of the digestive process. Foods and their properties. Antioxidants. The role and functions of the digestive system, from the mouth to the rectum.

I describe the brain-digestive system unit, the intestinal flora. It does not appear in miracle diets or other diets, it is an organ like any other, like the liver or the lungs. The thousands of intestinal bacteria that work for us: they can cause us illnesses, but also prolong our life, improve our memory, intervene in our emotional state, lower or raise our cholesterol, intervene in our cardiovascular health. And we explain how to take care of this organ, your diet. We don't just eat for ourselves, we also eat for them. But without physical exercise, no diet is any good. And we explain why. The functions of the muscle, of the adipose tissue, the intervention of our skeleton, the cerebral system and the digestive system, as an inseparable unit and the diet is one more component. In short, a scientific vision of nutrition, which is more than just the digestive system or food. If we understand all this, we will be able to live longer and healthier. Intense physical exercise lengthens telomeres and therefore our longevity".
