The International Press Club presented its international journalism awards on 8 September 2021 in Madrid. Degussa, the leading company in Europe in the marketing of physical investment gold, presented the awards to the winners. three Golden Roses and four Silver Roses which were presented to the laureates.
This year's edition paid tribute to the journalists murdered last April in Burkina Faso, David Beriáin y Roberto FraileThe International Journalism Award, which consisted of two Golden Roses, was presented to them. Carlos Herrera received the Degussa Golden Rose for her long professional career. The rest of the award winners, to whom Silver Roses were presented, were the author of international repercussion María Dueñasthe photojournalist Jordi Socíasthe correspondent of Radio Televisión Portuguesa in Spain, Daniela Santiagoand the partnership Women for Africachaired by María Teresa Fernández de la Vega.
The awards were presented on 8 September at a ceremony attended by the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, the Councillor Enrique López, and the Delegate for Culture of Madrid City Council, Andrea Levy.
The International Press Club highlights the "professional work (of David Beriáin y Roberto Fraile) over the years and in different media, as well as their example of courage and perseverance in the service of direct, committed journalism without barriers. It awarded them its International Journalism Prize, which it presents annually to the most outstanding correspondents or special envoys, for the quality and commitment of their work. Accustomed to high-risk missions, in war zones or in situations compromised by the investigation of corruption, death surprised Beriáin and Fraile in Africa while filming a documentary on poaching in a dangerous area of Burkina Faso, part of the Sahel, where various terrorist groups are active in an attempt to control some of the countries with weak governments and institutions.
The Club, which has been active for more than half a century, awarded the radio, press and television journalist for his long and successful professional career in different media over the years. Carlos Herrera for "cultivating its own style that creates an emotional bond with its audience, displaying independence and professionalism".
The prize for the author with an international impact was awarded to the writer María DueñasThe author returns to the theme of his great publishing success 'El tiempo entre costuras' with his novel 'Sira', once again set in places and cities of the world with a Spanish imprint.
The Lifetime Achievement Award for photojournalism went to Jordi Socíasa witness and a singular creator who, since the 1970s, has remembered the change in Spain with a lucid and creative gaze".
The award for the most outstanding foreign correspondent went to Daniela SantiagoHe has been covering Spanish news for six years for Portugal's Radiotelevisión RTP in an incisive and active manner, as in his long career as a special envoy around the world.
The prize for an institution that stands out for its defence of human values has been awarded to Women for AfricaThe association presided over by María Teresa Fernández de la Vega for "its tireless action to improve the living conditions and dignity of women in the difficult context of life on the African continent".
The International Press Club brings together associations of foreign correspondents and Spanish journalists with international experience and is chaired by Javier Martín-Domínguez. It has been in existence for more than a century, promoting the presence of Spain in the world and the knowledge of international affairs in our country.
